Although it has been a long time since the last update, there has been steady progress on the website. Most of the recent data has been related to individual bridges. Recently, 35 photos from the E.D. Bates collection were added to Noble County, Ohio bridges.  This includes many bridges that formerly had no photos. In the past two weeks, 250 additional photos from the Traugott Keller collection have been added.

Over 200 Québec pictures from Gérald Arbour's collection and the Bibliothèque et Archives nationales du Québec have been added.
Todd Clark has provided a substantial amount of new data that has added new entries and updated details on thousands of structures in nearly every US state.  Updates to Canadian data will follow.

Added dozens of uncovered wood truss bridges in the western states from Todd Clark's research.
Many updates to Québec bridge data being added from Gérald Arbour's research.  He has provided 200 additional pictures that will be added soon.

Thomas Kipphorn's data for Cameron, Elk, McKean and Somerset Counties in Pennsylvania has been added.
Photos from Warren White's trip to New Brunswick are being added.  He visited all of the province's historic covered bridges last summer.
We have discovered that a number of covered bridges used to exist in Hawai'i. Thank you to Paul Santo at Hawai'i DOT for helping research those structures.

This morning's update includes additional information on Centre County, Pennsylvania bridges based on research by Linda Burns.
Over 70 former bridges of Iowa have been added. This information was taken from a 1970 publication by the State Historical Society.

The Randolph County Public Library (North Carolina) has allowed us to post covered bridge pictures from their collection.

Today, I posted an update that includes the final batch of known wood truss bridges in Ohio. This information was taken from Miriam Wood's research.  In total, over 4700 Ohio bridges have now included in our database.

About 170 new photos of Ohio bridges from Todd Clark's collection have been added. These are from the counties alphabetically between Hamilton and Noble.

I have also added pictures of existing bridges in Alabama and Georgia from our recent trip.  Some of the data in those states has been updates as well.

Due to an error on my part, I needed to renumber some of the former New York bridges on the website. In the 1960's and 1970's a number of private bridges and foot bridges were assigned World Guide numbers. These were later reclassified as modern shelters and assigned letters to replace the numbers. I thought I had blocked out all those numbers before I started adding former bridges. I have discovered that was not the case and have made the necessary updates.

The bridges impacted are:

Recent updates include enhancements and additions to Adams, Luzerne, and Northumberland Counties in Pennsylvania and a few Georgia bridges. Details about the known covered bridges in Wisconsin have been added as well.

We have learned that the West Paden Bridge (PA/38-19-12) in Columbia County, Pennsylvania and Bittenbender's Bridge (PA/38-40-01) in Luzerne County were destroyed by flood waters on June 28th. West Paden had been half of the only remaining set of twin bridges in the state. The East Paden Bridge is still standing.

Robert Laughlin has shared his extensive list of Kentucky covered bridges. With his help, over 700 bridges in that state have now been documented.

Ron Branson of the County History Preservation Society (www.countyhistory.org) has submitted many Indiana covered bridge pictures from his collection and offered a few corrections as well.

Gérald Arbour has submitted additional pictures from his collection.  There are now over 1100 pictures of Québec covered bridges on the site, over half of them from Gérald's collection.

Howard Rogers of South Carolina sent a notebook full of information about the covered bridges in North & South Carolina.  This is a significant addition because of the lack of research available in this part of the country.

Gérald Arbour, a well-known expert on Quebec's covered bridges, has made some additions and corrections to our information in that area.  In addition, over 400 pictures of Quebec bridges from his collection are now included on the website. 

On the west coast, Bill Cockrell has been spending lots of time searching through the archives at the Oregon DOT.  As a result, over a dozen newly discovered bridges have been added and over 200 others have updated information.

New Brunswick data received after my February 9th posting has been added to the website.  This information was mostly from the early 1950s.  As a result, 370 past and present covered bridges are now documented for that province.

There have been a couple additions lately. A number of Douglas County, Oregon pictures have been added. Also, pictures of New Brunswick and Nova Scotia bridges have been added.

Although not as large as recent additions, this one is significant in that it comes from an area where we have a great need for assistance.  Todd Clark has submitted pictures of some Kentucky and West Virginia covered bridges. The information he included added over a dozen new entries to our list of known structures. Some of the new pictures include the Jackstown Bridge, Cottontown Bridge, Camp Nelson Bridge, Claysville Bridge, and Bardstown, to name a few.

Details of about 500 bridges from 17 Pennsylvania counties (Perry through York) have been added to the website. Most of this information came from Fred Moll's recent book - "Pennsylvania's Covered Bridges Our Heritage." With this addition, all of the known covered bridges in that state are listed on the website. Also, a significant amount of new information has been added to Lancaster County listings. Pictures of many of these bridges will follow.
Finally, 50 pictures of Massachusetts bridges have been added.

Announcements about the project are distributed to the various covered bridge societies for inclusion in their newsletters.

January 2004
The ability to directly access the database from the website is added.  Further testing streamlines the process of reporting and adding data.
Information about 400+ lost bridges in New Hampshire is added to the database. Thanks to Dick Roy for providing this information.
Information about 860 Quebec bridges is added to the database. Thanks to Gerald Arbour for providing this information.

December 2003
After testing a variety of methods to store and submit bridge data, the website is developed and made available to the project organizers.

Summer 2003
Trish Kane sends out a note to see if there is interest in compiling a list of lost covered bridges.  The "Covered Spans of Yesteryear" project is born.  A database is developed to store the information.
