Comments:
Per the St. Albans Daily Messenger, March 14, 1905, "East Berkshire, March 14.---J. A. Rouse, C. D. Phelps, and O. E. Kinney, who were appointed with the selectmen as a committee to investigate the covered wooden bridge that spans the Missisquoi river at this village, have the matter under consideration. The bridge was built in 1855 under the supervision of the late Dolphus Paul, by Charles Clark, of St. Albans, later employed by the Central Vermont railroad as bridge builder. Thirty years ago [January 2, 1876] the Nutting wooden bridge, 124 feet in length, came down in a jam of ice and struck with tremendous force. A crowd stood on either side to bid it good bye, but it swayed, quivered, groaned, and stood firm, and has been in use ever since." The committee apparently recommended replacing the bridge, as a new iron bridge was under construction by later the same year. The crossing appears that it would have been around 200 feet. One related article said that the bridge was 53 years old.
