Centerville Railroad Bridge, Hartford, Windsor County, VT Built 1859 Lost 5 Feb 1887
Richard E. Roy Collection
Comments:
Per Report of the Investigating Committee of the Vermont Central Railroad Company to the Stockholders, July 1, 1853, the bridge was known as Dickenson's Bridge and was a 4-span 650-foot Howe, Deck. It was accidentally burned in 1859. The replacement covered bridge was also a deck truss. It caught fire as a result of a derailment accident. Four cars of a northbound passenger train were derailed on the bridge approach and plunged into the river. 36 people died. Each span appears to have been about 150 feet.
