Comments:
This was a two span structure with curved portals. The center pier was in the mill pond serving the Stone Mill below. Per The Woodstock Post, January 30, 1874, Mr. Parker in passing through the covered bridge over Black River at Perkinsville (near Thomas Hobson's) overturned his sleigh on the ice. Per the Springfield Reporter, March 22, 1889, "Repairs on the covered bridge will be begun as soon as possible. It will be newly planked, and the crook will be straightened. About this crook there is a great diversity of opinion. Some claim that it grows worse each year, others that it is the same it has been for over twenty years. An ice jam in 1863 struck the pier and moved it bodily about a foot down stream. That fact is apparent to all. The only point of disagreement is whether it moves a bit each year or not. It seems to depend on whether the bridge is seen each day or not. Those living close by it say it remains the same; those at a distance who see it occasionally, say it grows worse. At any rale, it is good policy for the town to repair now." Despite its dangerous right-angle approaches, it served traffic on VT106 until replaced in 1939. Per the Springfield Reporter, June 8, 1939, "PERKINSVILLE BRIDGE CONTRACT AWARDED MONTPELIER---The contract for the three-span plate girder bridge in Perkinsville to replace the old covered bridge was awarded Friday to the low bidder, Edward L. Knight of South Royaltton for $72,064.64."
