Comments:
Per the Vermont Phoenix (Brattleboro), December 13, 1878, "...the covered bridge near Oscar Ware's,. just this side of Fayetteville [Newfane], is undermined, and partly upset, the new covered bridge south of Burdett's mill is entirely gone..." The original arched portals were later squared off. Per The Burlington Free Press, May 11, 1945, "MONTPELIER, May 10. ---Bids on the new bridge across the West river at Newfane, which the war production board has just authorized, will be opened at the Statehouse at 10 a.m. May 25, the state highway board announced today. The bridge, a 69 foot steel I-beam structure with a concrete floor, will replace the present covered bridge which was built in 1841." A group had formed to rebuild it at a new site. That never happened.
