Comments:
Per the Vermont Phoenix, December 20, 1878, "Brookside. The new covered bridge known as the "Gaines bridge' which was placed across the stream this fall, came very near going; one corner of the abutment was washed out so that part of the bridge settled about six inches." Per The Brattleboro Reformer, September 24, 1938, "South Newfane----The severe rain storm and high wind did a great deal of damage here. A cement bridge at the foot of Dover hill, three bridges in Brookside, the covered bridge near Claud Reed's and the new iron bridge in South Newfane went out." Per The Brattleboro Reformer, September 27, 1938, "Windham county's roster of covered bridge was reduced to 24 by last week's flood. Those swept away were: Center bridge in Wardsboro; Brookside bridge in Newfane; West Dover bridge and Ryder bridge in Grafton." It was damaged when a truck missed the curve and went through the side into the river.
