Comments:
Per the Burlington Free Press, May 13, 1870, a fire on the 9th at East Poultney had damaged many businesses and destroyed the covered bridge valued at ~$2,000. Per the Rutland Daily Herald, December 12, 1930, "Per the Rutland Daily Herald, August 7, 1930, J. P. Mullens, contractor, is taking down the covered bridge at East Poultney. The slate which was put on 58 years ago is in splendid condition and will be used on other buildings." Per the Rutland Daily Herald, December 12, 1930, a reader took issue with an earlier article that claimed that the bridge had been built in 1874. The reader claimed that the bridge had been an old bridge already by that time and had been condemned, but repaired in 1875 with the addition of "a half circle placed on each side" (arches added), which had allowed the bridge to stand until 1930 in good condition.
