Comments:
Confederates burned the bridge as they evacuated the area on September 1, 1863 corresponding to Burnside's (Shackleford) advance and Buckner's retreat. Union soldiers then established a rail base at Loudon, shuttling supplies across the river. Confederates again took control of the area a few months later, but were displaced by Union Gen. William T. Sherman's advance again in December. By April 1864, a temporary bridge was in place and was under Union control the rest of the war.
