Comments:
There is a local legend indicating that this bridge’s builder was a Vermont carpenter who built it to resemble one in his hometown. Unfortunately, details of that builder are not known and the bridge’s builder is attributed to “Potter”. The 1968 Ashtabula Historical Society Bulletin identifies the construction date as 1868. A project in 1987 added a 90-foot laminated arch support system and widened the bridge by five feet allowing for two-way traffic. It also included a new floor and roof. The work was done by Ashtabula County Highway Department workers under the direction of John Smolen. Materials for the project cost $60,000. The bridge is sometimes referred to as the Mullen Bridge from the Mullen farm which used to be near the structure.
