Comments:
This may be the Burlington-Winooski bridge on the Richard Sanders Allen list in the NSPCB archives. The bridge crossed the Lime Kiln Gorge just upstream from the main Winooski Gorge. A 278-foot concrete open spandrel bridge was built at this location in 1913/1914, including an ~100-foot long arch over the gorge. Per the Burlington Weekly Free Press, October 26, 1855, "Winooski Lime. Fifteen years ago, the "Highbridge" across the Winooski between Burlington and Colchester, was one of the most beautiful spots to be found in New England, or anywhere. An old rustic bridge spanned the gorge through which, seventy feet below, the black waters of the river rolled deep and strong, as now. First the old bridge grew unsafe and a very unpoetical new covered bridge took its place." The article goes on about how the beauty spot was ruined by the railroads and the expansion of the lime kiln works.
